Two spider heads are shown: one has black eyes, like sunglasses lenses, and no pedipalps. The other has curved metallic blue-green eyes, like a real Maratus volans, and two fuzzy limbs below the eyes, on either side of a pair of big leathery fangs.
On the left, the original 2018 Maratus volans head. Its pedipalps were sacrificed to make the 2019 head. On the right, the 2019 head, with the upgraded lenses and pedipalps created in 2020, and the chelicacerae new in 2020.

The 2018 spider head was the first that I built that incorporated fur-like materials. The 2019 head, and 2020 form with several upgraded components, were a refinement of technique and practice.

  1. The inspiration - Maratus volans is a neat spider.
  2. Creating the 3d model - some notes on Blender
  3. Assembly and construction - general notes on papercraft models reinforced with a wire armature and spray foam, attached to a construction helmet liner
  4. Cutting lenses for eyes - a description of the technique used in forming shiny metallic see-through curved lenses for the spider head, which may be of interest for costume-makers and other crafters
  5. Notes for a fourth edition of the head - basically a todo list.
